In this episode of the podcast we hear from Aaron Young who only started “running” a couple of years ago while using Triathlons as a path back to fitness after a long time out of sport with an ACL injury. As a young person Aaron enjoyed and achieved success in cricket and AFL. Running was not something he thought he was good at... Thats all changed. This last weekend he came second in Birdy’s Backyard behind previous podcast guest, Phil Gore (episode 116), covering approx. 356 km (53 laps of 6.7k - thats 53 hours)! Aaron loves being outside and moving through the environment - he finds running a perfect way for him to do just that regularly :) Aaron’s Tips - Find some experienced runners and learn from them and take it slowly. https://fitmindfitbody.co/podcast/

Episode 120 - Running is my antidepressant - as long as I run I’m happy :)
Tuesday Aug 09, 2022
Tuesday Aug 09, 2022
In this episode we talk to Felicity Hoy about her running journey. In her early 20s it was the idea that she might join the police force that actually got her running, even though she didn’t become a policewomen she did keep running! She found that running was her happy place and as she ran longer and longer events, she was also quite good at it.
Felicity credits running with all the good things in her life including overcoming an eating disorder and meeting her husband (and all the things that came after that :) ). The independence, self reliance and empowerment that running provides Felicity flows into the rest of her life when she’s working with her husband and raising their 2 young boys.
Felicity’s Running Tips - couch to 5k, don’t compare to other people or your old self, run for the fun of it and don’t quit (be consistent) .

Episode 118 - From Penny Farthing bike racing to marathon running…
Tuesday Aug 02, 2022
Tuesday Aug 02, 2022
In this episode of the podcast hard working ICU nurse Nicole Woodfield shares her inspiring running journey with us. As a young person hockey was Nicole’s sport and then came Penny Farthing racing which is fascinating for a number of reasons including the fact that she is not very tall :) Unfortunately Nicole had to give up Penny Farthing racing because she was diagnosed with cancer and needed to spend money and time recovering. It wasn’t until years later when Nicole was nursing and dealing with a lot of stress at work that a work colleague suggested she start running as a way to relieve stress! That was 6 years ago and she’s been running ever since, and loving it.
Running has given Nicole a feeling of empowerment and control over her life that she didn’t necessarily feel before. On top of that the friends she’s made through running have been an incredible support as she continues to deal with health issues (and life in general).
Nicole ’s Running Tips - Get a well fitted pair of shoes (and socks) and then if you know Nicole, she likes to take her friends to a quiet place to start running, a little at a time - walking 100mts/running 100mts. Run with people who have a similar outlook on life.

Episode 116 - Phil says he’s an introvert until you ask him about running!
Tuesday Jul 26, 2022
Tuesday Jul 26, 2022
Phil was a good runner at school but it wasn’t until he became a fire fighter 8 years ago that he decided to start running again to get and stay fit. Once he was back running he remembered how much he loved it and hasn’t stopped since.
ParkRun played a big part in getting him running again - it was an easy and accessible event to keep him training and focus on his improvement.
Not long after starting at ParkRun, Phil started a min 5k run streak (he ran a minimum of 5k everyday) which he continued for 3 years. He is still running a minimum of 5k’s most days unless injured or recovering from a big event!
Now he runs a lot further than 5k’s in backyard & front-yard ultra events. He has become very good at these very long events. If you’re not sure how this type of ultra works, its basically a 6.71k loop every hour on the hour - you keep going until you miss a cut off. It’s the last man/women standing who wins. Fun fact — in 24 hours you cover 100 miles and the world record is 90 hours! You can find a little more on these types of ultras here - https://backyardultra.com/ you might find one in your backyard :p
Phil says he’s an introvert until you ask him about running!
“For a social sport running is very social!” ~ Phil Gore ~
Phil’s Running Tips - start small, don’t do too much at once, make it social, and focus on the journey not just the goals.

In this episode of the podcast we talk to local politician, David O’Byrne about his running journey. Aussie Rules football was David’s original sport of choice - it wasn’t until he’d been retired from football for a few years that he took up running to get fitter/healthier.
There has been a number of ups and downs in David’s running journey but he’s now a massive advocate of ParkRun because he sees what it’s doing for his family and his community, not to mention his own physical and mental health.
“Running re-fills every part of me!” ~ David O’Byrne ~
David’s Running Tips - shoes are important, wear comfortable clothes, take it easy and take your time and don’t give up!
