Episode 190 - Running can be a positive mental health tonic if you let it
Tuesday Apr 11, 2023
Tuesday Apr 11, 2023
In this episode of the podcast we hear from retired nurse Karen Bentley. As a young person she enjoyed staying fit on the hockey field but when she started training as a nurse sport took a back seat in her life.
Karen's life took a significant turn when her son was born with profound multiple disabilities 40 years ago. She and her husband became his carers while holding down their respective jobs - there wasn’t much, if any free time for 30 years. At one point her back started to play up with the demands of work and lifting her son - she went to a physio who said she should get some exercise. She then went from the gym to running and hasn’t stopped running/triathlon since (about 20 years).
She believes running has given her meaning and a sense of identity, as well at the strength to cope with adverse situations.
Karen’s Tips - start at the absolute basics, don’t focus on the distance and don’t compare yourself to the person who’s running 10 or 20kms. Just focus on time on your feet, believe in yourself and finally give yourself permission to do it even when its a struggle.

Episode 188 - Running can Inspire Magic in your life - Kay Bretz
Tuesday Apr 04, 2023
Tuesday Apr 04, 2023
In this episode of the podcast Kay Bretz share’s his fascinating running journey. He grew up in Germany and attended boarding school in Scotland when he was 16/17 years old, it was here that he discovered he loved running in the Scottish hills! He ran marathons through university and found it a great way to balance life and stay focused.
However, once Kay started work as a business consultant, he found he was travelling around the world and running consistently became too hard, so he let it go for a few years.
In 2011, his work took him to Melbourne to live and his work schedule changed. This was when he realised that he still had unfinished business in the marathon world - namely that he wanted to get below 3 hours for a marathon. He knew to do that he would need to train consistently - he did it and enjoyed it. Running became his new lifestyle.
In 2015 Kay went from marathon running to ultra running - he says to give his life more balance. He took on a mentor when he realised that always chasing another marathon personal best was becoming very stressful for him. His mentor picked up that Kay had an obsessive type personality and needed to “let go” a little. He prescribed a mystery run with a friend and when his friend turned right instead of left as Kay had ALWAYS done when heading out for a training run, a light bulb when off. Kay had taken the some of the joy out of his running by always wanting to control/obsessive over his training. The next for him was to sign up for a trail ultra rather than his usual controllable city marathon! He now loves jumping into ultra distance events and has represented Australia across the globe.
What Kay has learnt from these new choices (and mindset) has lead him to writing a book called Turning Right - Inspire the Magic (see the link below) which he uses in his consulting business.

*I’ve listened to an audio version of this book and I can’t recommend it highly enough if you want to master your inner game - its awesome!
Kay’s Tips - Don’t over do it too quickly too early, your body needs time to adapt, own body weight strength exercises.

Episode 186 - When you have a great run - take the time to be grateful!
Tuesday Mar 28, 2023
Tuesday Mar 28, 2023
In this episode of the podcast New Zealander, Andrew McDowall entertains us with his running journey from his very own recording studio! Andrew works for himself writing music for the screen, recording voices and doing sound design/mixing. All this means the audio is pretty good :p
As you can image Andrews early years were full of music, that being said she loved and was good at various sports he has a go at. But it wasn’t until his late 20’s when some friends asked if he’d like to do the Rotorua Marathon that he took on running as an adult. That run was so crap for him that he decided to work out how he could do it better and some 15 years later he’s still running long distance events around the world - mainly ultra trail events.
He believes running has given him discipline and kept him sane amongst a number of things - in fact he’s found that the positives that come from running are huge in his life. He loves it!
Some great advice from Andrew - “when you have a great run, don’t just take it for granted and get on with your day, instead sit with it for a few minutes and be grateful.”

Andrew’s Tips - Don’t overdo it straight away, start very slowly, be consistent and find beautiful places to run!

In this episode of the podcast, running coach, mum, teacher and podcaster, Isobel Ross shares some of her inspiring running journey - from preferring books to running when she was a kid, to representing Australia multiple times in long distance events across the globe (including the elusive Barkley Marathons) - she is a force to be reckoned with.
However running isn’t the only sport she was good at - in her early 20s Isobel was pretty competitive in mountain biking but gave it up after a nasty fall. Then in her mid 30’s (after 10 years of relative inactivity) she decided to make some healthier choices and started running - she hasn’t looked back. She says running has changed her life and made her a better person!
Isobel has taken her 20 years of running experiences and now provides running coaching and a running podcast (see the links below).
Isobel’s coaching website - https://peakendurancecoaching.com.au/
Isobel’s podcast - https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/peak-endurance/id1479052215
Isobel’s Tips - If you’re a complete beginner, start with run/walk training. If you’ve done some running then it’s consistency that you need to develop. Get a consistency which will develop your base and then you can work on speed and harder sessions. Aim for “I’m a runner therefore I run consistently”. This should be enjoyable - or you won’t keep at it.

Episode 182 - Running has given me self efficacy and resilience
Tuesday Mar 14, 2023
Tuesday Mar 14, 2023
In this episode of the podcast we hear from Susan Grober, who immigrated to Australia with her family as a child. She went on to develop a couple of careers - one as a cartographer for the mining industry WA and recently she’s retrained as a physio (and running coach).
About 13 years ago a family friend started running and made it sound fun and exciting, so Susan and her husband at the time decided to give it a go! She got all the usual newbie running injuries and was sick of being told by movement specialists (who didn’t run themselves) that she had to stop running in order to recover from many of her injuries. This is one of the reasons she choose to retrain as a physio - to help runners to keep running!
Running ultramarathons in particular has helped Susan to develop the mental fortitude that she needed to complete her double degree and to face other difficult times in her life.
As a coach Susan tries to get across to her students that the training journey is the thing that changes you not finish line. It teaches you commitment, dedication and ultimately about yourself.
Susan’s Coaching/Physio business - https://www.facebook.com/thelongrunphysio
Susan’s Tips - running doesn’t mean running all the time - start with a run/walk strategy and you’ll get there much quicker than you think.
