For the next few weeks I’ll be interspersing my new interviews with some of my favourite past episodes as I’m away from home and haven’t booked too many calls in :)
This flash back with the amazing Betty Menzies from August 2021, has always stuck with me. Betty has such a wonderful spirit that its hard to not hang on every word as she shares her love of running/life :)
She started running when she was 47, she is now 77 (now 79) and still running and running fast. Betty story is truely inspirational, if Betty is still running at 77 (79) after 2 hip replacements what is your excuse?
A running tip from Betty - drop the shoulders

Episode 208 - “Running on trails brings me lots happiness.” ~ Jess Collins ~
Tuesday Jun 13, 2023
Tuesday Jun 13, 2023
In this episode of the podcast neuroscientist, Jess Collins shares her journey to ultra trail running. Jess has always been into sports of one type or another - she eventually found herself trail running after “running” the overland track, she’s been hooked ever since :) Once Jess found trail running she also found that she was naturally good at it and has achieved a number of great results, including representing Australia!
Jess is a runner and a neuroscientist, and as a result she brings other layers of understanding to what it means to be a runner. It was fabulous to hear her articulate some of these connections so well (i.e. helped me to nerd out on a little neuroscience :p ).
One the biggest benefits of running for Jess has been the friendships and the community that she’s developed through running. It’s also taught her a lot about herself and helped her maintain positive mental health, as it often puts her into a mediative thinking space.
I’m sure you’ll love the obvious enthusiasm Jess has for her running!

Jess’s Tips - run/walk intervals, building your aerobic base.

In this episode Steve Appleby talks about his real passion for everything running and particularly mountain running. He started running back in the late 80s and hasn’t stop since, with his only real injury (a broken ankle) as a result of being hit in the head by a branch during a night run! He credits his lack of injuries to being consistent, to having recovery days and loves a bit of cold water after a hard run.
At almost 70 years old Steve credits running for his great physical and mental health - by being consistent but flexible with his running he hasn’t let it become a stressor, its just something he fits into most days. And if he can’t run he’ll do something else, like go for a walk to keep moving.
After listening to this episode it’ll be hard to not head straight out the door and up a mountain trail for a run!

Steve’s Tips - Find something thats not too hard, you don’t need to train like an elite athlete - just do it, make sure you have some rest/recovery days, find what you love about running, be consistent and follow the 10% rule.

In this episode of the podcast Kate Hiney shares her journey to becoming a runner, involving her family in her routine, and the importance of running for mental health.
Kate grew up in a sporty family that encouraged physical activity, as a result sport of some sort has always been a part of her life. After back packing/scuba diving her way around the world for a few years, Kate (originally from the UK) eventually settled in Australia and now lives in Tasmania with her partner and twin girls.
Running is so much a part of who she is that when she doesn’t get to lace up her shoes for a day or two she gets a feeling of unrest, like something isn’t quite right. Running helps her be more productive in her work and gives her the patience and energy needed for her 2 year old twin girls 🙂
On top of being a mum of twins, Kate works in the mental health/disability sector and is studying to be a nurse. Rather than being another thing to do, running helps her fit all these things into her life. We agreed that “running should be prescribed by doctors”. :)
Kate’s Tips - get a good pair of shoes, give it a crack, don’t give up in the first K, run/walk is a good strategy, find a group to run with.

Episode 202 - How running saved my life more than once - Michelle Frost
Tuesday May 23, 2023
Tuesday May 23, 2023
This episode is a little different – with over 200 episodes in the bag this is a flashback episode. I’ve had a number of people ask me about my running journey, so I’ve decided to re-publish my personal episode from last year. I touch on a few of the times when I believe running saved my life AND why I started this podcast in the first place! If you don’t know me personally, it’ll be a bit of an introduction, if you do know me then you may well learn something new about me :p
Michelle’s Running Tips – just get started, enjoy the process and be consistent.
I’d love to hear from you – shoot me an email whether its just some feedback, you’d like to share your story on the podcast, you’d like to recommend someone else for the podcast OR just to say hi 🙂 -> m@fitmindfitbody.co
