In this episode of the podcast we talk to Shane Egan who has set himself a Marathon challenge at the end of the week - 7th October. On Friday he will be rowing 42.7k and running 42.195k, on Saturday he will ride 85k (which is 2 marathons) and on Sunday he will row 42.7k and run 42.195 again! A total of 6 marathons over 3 days…
Why?
To raise funds (for Bears of Hope) and awareness of pregnancy and infant loss.
A couple of years ago Shane’s sister lost a child, then some friends also lost a child and finally he and his wife had a miscarriage. All of these sad events lead him to realise just how common miscarriage and still birth is in our community. With this challenge he plans to raise funds and awareness of pregnancy and infant loss, so more people will talk about it and get the support they need.
Shane is a sporty bloke, but he’s not a runner, so this will definitely be a challenge for him.

In this episode we have the always “Yaffling” Job Tai. Job, like so many of us “started” running many times in his life but it wasn’t until he was trying to deal with a personal issue that is stuck! A close friend took him on a run and he’s been running and yaffling ever since :)
Job has a busy life with 6 kids and work as a PE teacher. Most of his running is done with people and is full of “yaffling” (talking) & solving all the problems of the world…
He is one of the biggest running advocates I know :)

Job’s Tips - Start small and build (no ridiculous goals), don’t be too hard on yourself, grab a partner and enjoy the journey with someone (or hit Job up :p ) and enjoy it, be nice to yourself!

In this episode Mike Kidd opens up about his struggles with weight loss and mental health (especially connected to grief). At one point last year he and his wife had, had enough of their yoyo weight issues and how it was effecting their lives. So they had weight loss surgery together on the same day (their 24th wedding anniversary).
Running has become Mike’s exercise of choice after the surgery and he’s not looking back. He’s loves ParkRun and the “Zen Time” that running has given him. He also said that running has improved his outlook on life and makes him much nicer to be around - according to his family and work mates :) *Something most of us can relate too :p
Mike’s Tips - Start slow, forget the pace (you’re only racing yourself), run to what feels good. Not every run needs to be a personal best. Don’t be too hard on yourself - if you’re running because you’re enjoying yourself you’ll do it a lot longer than if you think you have to.

In this episode we go a little off script in a very raw conversation with Yvette Darsaklis. Running has been an on and off activity in Yvette’s life as she’s juggled 5 kids, working as a nurse, weight issues and constant negative thoughts in her head! Although she has a real love/hate relationship with running, many of her happiest memories are when the whole family has come together to run in an event.
This episode touches on many sensitive topics for most of us (especially mums who run) and I applaud Yvette for being vulnerable enough to share whats going on for her in a very real way.
Yvette’s Tips - Start slow so you can get through the breathing “wall”, at which point you will be able to regulate your breathing. When you first get started aim for 10 minutes of running.

In this episode of the podcast we hear from Bianca White. Bianca grew up in a very sporty family - they all participate in individual sports or team sports together. She is currently at university finishing up a Masters in Physiotherapy, so movement is a massive part of her life.
One of Bianca’s favourite sports atm is AFL - she plays women AFL and she works as a sports trainer for a football team.
She can’t remember a time when she wasn’t running or around running. The main benefit Bianca gets from running is that she feels good - without running in her life she doesn’t think she’d be as happy as she is..
Bianca’s Tips - Get started, have a go, do it with friends, don’t stop and don’t start too hard.
