In this insightful episode, we check in with Anna Speirs on her training journey for the 'Gone Nuts' Ultra Adventure Run. Anna, based in Broome, offers a candid and vulnerable perspective on the ups and downs of her training process.
Anna starts by sharing her struggles over the past month, expressing that her running experience has been challenging both mentally and physically. She reflects on a moment of realisation where she felt that running had adversely impacted her overall well-being, leading to a period of reevaluation and adjustment.
Despite not suffering from injuries, Anna emphasises that her biggest hurdle has been the mental aspect of training. She describes the mental fatigue and lack of energy affecting her day-to-day life, including her social activities and relaxation time.
To address these challenges, Anna has been working closely with her coach, adjusting her training regimen to better suit her needs. This included dropping a running session and incorporating cross-training activities like swimming and biking to maintain variety and motivation.
Anna also discusses her approach to nutrition and ensuring her body receives the right fuel for her training. She consulted a nutritionist and made adjustments to her diet, particularly increasing her protein intake in the afternoons.
Throughout the conversation, Anna highlights the importance of acknowledging and being kind to oneself during the strenuous training period. She talks about finding a new motivation or 'why' to keep pushing through the demanding training schedule.
As the holiday season approaches, Anna plans to balance her training with family time and festivities. She expresses a renewed focus on enjoying the process and looking forward to seeing how her mindset and approach evolve in the coming weeks.

In this episode, we get an insightful update from Tim Gunton on his training for the 'Gone Nuts' Ultra Adventure Run. Tim's journey is a blend of dedication, adaptability, and humour as he prepares for this challenging event.
Tim has been diligently training, recently participating in the Triple Tops event in November. He humorously notes the difference in his performance now compared to when he was younger, indicating a keen awareness of how age impacts endurance and speed. Despite this, his enthusiasm for running remains undiminished.
He speaks about the importance of pacing his training, especially after feeling some fatigue post-Triple Tops. Tim plans to intensify his training in the coming weeks, focusing more on the duration of his activities rather than distance, given the lengthy nature of the 'Gone Nuts' event.
A unique aspect of Tim's training involves preparing for the nighttime segment of the race. He's planning runs at different times of the day and night to acclimatise to running in the dark, which is a crucial part of the ultra-marathon experience.
Tim also touches on the mental aspect of training, emphasising the need to push through tough moments and maintain a strong mental game. This includes training his mind to endure long periods of physical activity and minimal rest.
As the holiday season approaches, Tim discusses how he plans to balance training with the festivities and a cruise trip he has scheduled. He humorously contemplates the challenge of balancing food and alcohol intake with maintaining his training regimen during the cruise.

In this episode, we hear from Sharon Gunton, another dedicated athlete in our 'Gone Nuts' training series. Sharon, in conversation with Michelle, shares the ups and downs of her training journey, offering a realistic glimpse into the challenges of preparing for such a demanding event.
Sharon's training was disrupted by a two-week work trip to Darwin, where she faced oppressive weather conditions and a busy schedule, leading to a week without gym training. Despite this setback, she managed to fit in a two-hour gym session towards the end of her trip. This experience underlines the importance of adaptability and perseverance in training.
Upon returning, Sharon faced another challenge when she tripped over a tree root during a run, causing her to fall and sustain injuries. This incident not only affected her physically but also had a significant mental impact. She talks about how the fall shook her confidence, making her more cautious and conscious about her footing during runs.
Despite these challenges, Sharon is determined to continue her training. She plans to incorporate walking poles into her runs for added stability and is considering running techniques to prevent similar incidents in the future. Her approach highlights the importance of safety and technique in trail running.
As the holiday season approaches, Sharon discusses how she plans to balance her training with the festivities. She remains committed to her running schedule and intends to continue training, including a run on Christmas day.
