In this episode Steve Appleby talks about his real passion for everything running and particularly mountain running. He started running back in the late 80s and hasn’t stop since, with his only real injury (a broken ankle) as a result of being hit in the head by a branch during a night run! He credits his lack of injuries to being consistent, to having recovery days and loves a bit of cold water after a hard run.
At almost 70 years old Steve credits running for his great physical and mental health - by being consistent but flexible with his running he hasn’t let it become a stressor, its just something he fits into most days. And if he can’t run he’ll do something else, like go for a walk to keep moving.
After listening to this episode it’ll be hard to not head straight out the door and up a mountain trail for a run!

Steve’s Tips - Find something thats not too hard, you don’t need to train like an elite athlete - just do it, make sure you have some rest/recovery days, find what you love about running, be consistent and follow the 10% rule.

In this episode of the podcast Kate Hiney shares her journey to becoming a runner, involving her family in her routine, and the importance of running for mental health.
Kate grew up in a sporty family that encouraged physical activity, as a result sport of some sort has always been a part of her life. After back packing/scuba diving her way around the world for a few years, Kate (originally from the UK) eventually settled in Australia and now lives in Tasmania with her partner and twin girls.
Running is so much a part of who she is that when she doesn’t get to lace up her shoes for a day or two she gets a feeling of unrest, like something isn’t quite right. Running helps her be more productive in her work and gives her the patience and energy needed for her 2 year old twin girls 🙂
On top of being a mum of twins, Kate works in the mental health/disability sector and is studying to be a nurse. Rather than being another thing to do, running helps her fit all these things into her life. We agreed that “running should be prescribed by doctors”. :)
Kate’s Tips - get a good pair of shoes, give it a crack, don’t give up in the first K, run/walk is a good strategy, find a group to run with.

Ben’s Tips - Check out backyard ultras! When you’re in an event don't think about the whole event - start small and break it down into small chunks by focusing on the next tree or rock. Being in an event is about the journey, reaching the finishing line and about being a part of something so don't be afraid to walk and take it all in.

In this episode, we chat with Lincoln Quillam, engineer, explorer, adventurer and founder of the Kunanyi mountain run, about what make him so passionate about trail running. He shares how the Kokoda track in Papua New Guinea started him on his trail running journey.
We talk about the mental health benefits of trail running and how it can help us connect with nature and build a stronger community. Lincoln tells us about his weekly social runs, upcoming races he's participating in, and his experience with the Churchill Fellowship, which allowed him to travel and explore epic trail running destinations around the world.
We discuss the importance of maintaining trails and providing infrastructure that suits the demand for outdoor recreation. Lincoln compares two beautiful mountainous locations, Zermatt and Chamoni, for trail running and tells us what makes a great trail running destination, including epic landscapes, a strong local community, good services, and an anchor event that puts the place on the map.
Lastly, we dive into Lincoln's daily running routine, the psychological aspects of fitness, and the importance of finding motivation through commitments with others and new adventures. We also touch on his hobbies outside of trail running, like paragliding, and how he balances his family life with his passion for running.

Lincoln’s Tips - Stability in trail running is about your technique (hips of heels and shoulders over toes when you’re going down hill), your shoes don’t do the running, learn from others and lift your knees.
