This is the second part of a two part conversation (the first part is episode 214). The original episode with Vajin Armstrong went for 2 hours so I decided to split it into two to make easier listening for you :) Vajin is professional athlete (ultra distance running), music store owner and a life long meditator on a journey of self-discovery! I’m sure you can see why I would find that endlessly fascinating - I hope you do too!
In this episode we continue the conversation into Vajin’s journey of self discovery through running and mediation/mindfulness.
Here are some the things we discussed in this episode:-
- Vajin is on a journey of self discovery through mediation and running. It is not a journey that will likely ever be fully grasped, none the less it is a journey he is passionate about.
- the important of finding happiness in the present moment because the present moment is ultimately all we have - the right now.
- for Vajin, running is a great analogy for life - keeping him humble and grounded and showing him the transformative value when he embraces the intensity of running (like coal turning into a diamond under pressure)..
Thank you for allowing me to indulge in this conversation with Vajin over 2 episodes - I hope you enjoy them as much as I did!!
These episodes are for those who are deeply curious about the big questions and on their own journey of self discovery - which actually we all are, whether we’re aware of it or not - its called “life” :)
I believe that running and mindfulness are prefect vehicles for this endeavour - what do you think? …
Here are some links to Vajin online:-

His Facebook athlete page - https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100040336057547
Running tips from Vajin - develop a positive relationship with running, be careful about your self talk and what you hear from those around you, embrace the intensity and develop some positive mantras you can use when it feels hard. You do not need to be afraid of the pressure - after all it’s the pressure that is responsible for your transformation as a runner.

I’m sure you can see why I would find that endlessly fascinating - I hope you do too!
In this episode we talk about Vajin’s childhood and how his interest in meditation and self-discovery began at the early age of 15.
After which we touch on the following:-
- the value of challenging and difficult things
- explore mediation and consciousness
- the importance of engaging fully in the present moment including accepting bad/hard things
- the daily process of running as a practice for self-transcendence rather than results or competition
- the experience of ultra marathons... the transformative price we have to pay to finish (the transformation people got through in these long events)
- the juxta position of the western world getting more and more comfortable and the rise of the very uncomfortable sport of ultra marathons.. its like people are seeking to get uncomfortable BECAUSE life has become so comfortable (do we inherently know that theres something we can learn by how we deal with adversity/discomfort?)
- are marathons and ultra marathons a selfish endeavour?
Phew, and thats just part one :p

For the next few weeks I’ll be interspersing my new interviews with some of my favourite past episodes as I’m away from home and haven’t booked too many calls in :)
This flash back is with Phil Gore from July 2022 - back then Phil was not the World Backyard Ultra Champion! Last Wednesday (21 June 2023), Phil completed 102, 6.7k laps to take the world record! https://www.abc.net.au/news/2023-06-21/phil-gore-breaks-backyard-ultra-marathon-record-in-nanango/102498240
Check out this episode and learn a little about what makes this humble champ tick :)
Plus you can following him on instagram - https://www.instagram.com/phil.gore.ultrarunner/
A running tip from Phil - start small, don’t do too much at once, make it social, and focus on the journey not just the goals.

This flash back with the amazing Betty Menzies from August 2021, has always stuck with me. Betty has such a wonderful spirit that its hard to not hang on every word as she shares her love of running/life :)
She started running when she was 47, she is now 77 (now 79) and still running and running fast. Betty story is truely inspirational, if Betty is still running at 77 (79) after 2 hip replacements what is your excuse?
A running tip from Betty - drop the shoulders

Episode 208 - “Running on trails brings me lots happiness.” ~ Jess Collins ~
Tuesday Jun 13, 2023
Tuesday Jun 13, 2023
In this episode of the podcast neuroscientist, Jess Collins shares her journey to ultra trail running. Jess has always been into sports of one type or another - she eventually found herself trail running after “running” the overland track, she’s been hooked ever since :) Once Jess found trail running she also found that she was naturally good at it and has achieved a number of great results, including representing Australia!
Jess is a runner and a neuroscientist, and as a result she brings other layers of understanding to what it means to be a runner. It was fabulous to hear her articulate some of these connections so well (i.e. helped me to nerd out on a little neuroscience :p ).
One the biggest benefits of running for Jess has been the friendships and the community that she’s developed through running. It’s also taught her a lot about herself and helped her maintain positive mental health, as it often puts her into a mediative thinking space.
I’m sure you’ll love the obvious enthusiasm Jess has for her running!

Jess’s Tips - run/walk intervals, building your aerobic base.
