In this episode, we're excited to share the story of Jo Stumm, a dedicated runner and participant in the 'Gone Nuts' ultra trail race. Originally from Brisbane, Queensland, Jo has made a home in Tasmania, embracing the cooler climate and vibrant trail running community.
Jo recounts her early years growing up in Brisbane, where her engagement with sports was limited to a few options like netball and softball. It wasn't until her university years that she discovered running, initially as a means of stress relief and a break from studying. This casual pursuit evolved into a passion, leading her to participate in a few 10k races and triathlons in Queensland.
The transition to Tasmania marked a significant shift in Jo's running journey. The cooler weather and abundant trails offered a new playground for her running adventures. She found herself increasingly drawn to the trail running scene, inspired by the local community and the diverse landscape. Jo's experience highlights the joy of running both solo and with others, finding value in the solitude as well as the social aspects of running with friends.
Jo's approach to training is pragmatic and flexible, utilising online training plans and fitting her runs around her busy schedule. Her story is a testament to the power of running as a form of physical and mental well-being, a stress reliever, and a path to personal fulfilment.
As Jo prepares for the 'Gone Nuts' race, she shares her motivations and goals, emphasising the importance of enjoying the journey and the training process as much as the event itself. Her story is not just about the physical challenge of an ultra trail race but also about the mental and emotional journey that accompanies such an endeavour.

In this episode, we're on a joy run with the one and only Peter Wheatley! Imagine turning 60 and celebrating by running a marathon every day for 30 days! Sounds crazy? Not for Peter. This super-coach, who laces up his sneakers for fun, fitness, and a fair bit of problem-solving, didn't even start running until later in life!
Being an advocate for social justice, Peter doesn't just run for the joy or the health benefits, oh no! He's sprinting towards making a difference too, pushing for more job opportunities for people with disabilities. Talk about running with a purpose!
But what keeps him hitting the pavement day in, day out? It's all about saying "Yeah!" to being the best you can be while kicking negativity to the curb. So tune in, as Peter shares his journey of marathons, mindfulness, and making a difference! Remember, for Peter, running isn't just a sport, it's a high-energy, fun-loving, problem-solving, community-building lifestyle. And believe us, his enthusiasm is as contagious as his passion for running!
Apart from being Ultraman (age group 60-65) World Champ I am an accredited Triathlon coach and Health Coach..
On another note I would strongly recommend people doing an adult ed course on Marathon running ( and you setting it up! – I have the resources!)

Running tips from Peter -
1. Understand your "why": Know why you want to start running. Is it for health, for fun, or for something else?
2. Assess your time and commitments: Consider if you have enough time in your day for running. When you say yes to running, remember you are saying no to something else. Make sure that this "no" is acceptable within your life's commitments.
3. Consider the implications on your family life: As running can be a solitary pursuit, be sure to discuss with your family and ensure that your commitment to running aligns with your family's needs and expectations.
4. Understand what you are giving up: Be clear about what you might be sacrificing to make time for running, and ensure that it is a trade-off you are willing to make.
5. Engage in mindful running: Running can be an opportunity for self-improvement and self-awareness. Make the choice to be the best version of yourself.
6. Be aware of your food and drink intake: Regular intervals for food and drink, like in an endurance race, can be beneficial. It's important to keep your energy levels up while running.

In this engaging episode of Fit My Fit Buddy, they interview Andrew Davies, a professional from the intensive care field who hails from Melbourne. Andrew shares his passion for running and the mindful aspects of this activity. Interestingly, he reveals that he didn't always love running.
Andrew embarked on this journey as a means to stay fit, and over time, he fell in love with the practice. His devotion to running goes beyond the physical benefits as he believes it has made him a better doctor. He emphasizes how his running routine empowers him to inspire his patients to lead healthier lives.
Despite concerns from family members about the implications of his running activities on his health, Andrew continues to run for the sheer joy and satisfaction it brings him. He views running as a personal activity that provides him with much-needed 'me' time.
This episode digs deep into the world of a person who balances a demanding professional life with a commitment to personal health and wellness through running. It’s a great listen for those seeking motivation to maintain their own fitness journey regardless of the challenges they face.

Running tips from Andrew -
1. Incorporate trail running: Andrew mentions that trail running is more forgiving for the body due to its uneven surfaces and varied inclines. It also removes the pressure of achieving specific times, as every trail is different.
2. Understand your running style: Andrew stresses the importance of understanding and improving your running style to prevent injuries. He mentions a training program that helped him transition from a heel strike to a forefoot strike, and increase his steps per minute from 160 to 180.
3. Engage in strength training: Improving muscle strength, specifically in the glutes and hamstrings, can change your running profile and minimise injuries.
4. Maintain a healthy balance: While Andrew acknowledges his possible over-focus on running, he also emphasises the need for balance between running and other aspects of life. Recognising the potential for over-training and ensuring that running gives back as much as you put into it is crucial.
5. Run for yourself: Regardless of the opinions and comments of others, Andrew underscores the importance of running for personal satisfaction and well-being.
